The Independents

The new system introduces 25% of independent MPs into parliament. These are individuals without any party money, or donor money, or any way to improperly influence them. You will vote for a person and judge that person on what they say and how they present themselves in their personal communications and how they measure up in a forensic interview. You will know more about the independents as people than you do about any party candidate.

The same voting system F2PTP, will be used and in each independents constituency both first and second placed candidates will be elected.

Although it isn’t immediately obvious, the introduction of independent MPs dramatically shifts the power balance in parliament. No longer can the government party force through poor law, because they will need to get a proportion of the independents to back them in addition to their own MPs, who they can force to vote the way they want.

As it happens, most of our parliamentary problems, in my view, stem, from the vary narrow focus of extreme power, onto one person. Under this system, opposition can mean something and have teeth. The role of an independent will not lead to greatness or wealth and will truly be for those with the ability and passion to serve our country. They do exist.
